How to contribute to a successful workplacement?

Dear mentor/ coach,

 

You, as a mentor/ coach in the workplacement company can contribute to the success of the workplacement of trainees!

Your responsibility and challenge is to organize, plan, evaluate and assess the workplacement period of the trainee. This website provides "do-it yourself" instruments to help you with these activities. Click here to see a "job description" of the mentor/ coach.

 

Every work placement has six phases. You, as a mentor/coach and the trainee have to go through all the phases.

Below you find an overview of all the six phases with an explanation of what is expected from you in the role of mentor/coach.

PHASE 1: Organisation of the workplacement

The organisation of the work placement is of most importance to realize a productive and successful training period for both company and trainee.

PHASE 2: Planning of the training of the workplacement

Daily routine work comes first! But the trainee also has expectations. Good planning and organisation of the work placement and training activities give both the trainee and the mentor/coach structure and will assure that both achieve their formulated goals.

PHASE 3: Selection and introduction of the trainee

The right trainee at the right place. But how do you select your trainees? If both the expectations of the certified work placement and mentor/coach are in line, the main criteria for a successful work placement are made.

PHASE 4: The training and workplacement

How do you, in your job as a mentor/ coach, train your trainees? How do you give  instructions or feedback? Here you will find some instruments that will help you during this phase.

PHASE 5: Support and guidance

Trainees will have one of their first working experiences abroad in your company. They will develop the competences during this time in your work placement company. Supporting them in this development in the way they have to work and behave and motivating them is essential.

PHASE 6: Evaluation

By the end of the work placement, it is important to give feedback to the trainee on the work placement period as it helps the trainee in his/her future development, education and career! Give the trainee as concrete as possible tips so he/she can directly benefit of your feedback!

Important note:

It is not obliged to use (all) these tools, but it is just a service you can use in order to help the trainee in their personal and professional development.

Sometimes it is possible that you will have to use tools or instructions provided by the training organization of the trainee. This will depend on the training organization and differ from country to country.
